Making the most of a space that had served its purpose
After years of providing space for young children to play, the climbing frame had reached the end of its life. Its removal revealed a forgotten corner of the garden that enjoyed a very different aspect, with sunshine and shelter at times of day that the family had never really experienced before. The clients wanted to make better use of the space, creating somewhere to sit, relax and enjoy the garden.
Challenge
Although compact, the area came with several constraints. A mature silver birch limited excavation around its roots, a newly installed boundary fence felt visually dominant and a nearby trampoline drew the eye away from what could become a peaceful corner of the garden. The challenge was to create an attractive seating area whilst working sensitively with the existing features.
Solution
Rather than disturbing the tree roots, the seating area was designed as a gently raised circular space that worked with the existing ground levels. Corten steel edging defines the area, whilst a bonded gravel surface provides a firm, practical finish for everyday use. The surrounding planting softens the new boundary fence, helps screen the trampoline and creates a greater sense of enclosure, allowing the seating area to feel tucked away within the garden.
Outcome
The completed space has become a calm destination within the garden. Surrounded by layered planting, it enjoys sunlight through much of the day whilst remaining sheltered from the prevailing wind. What was once an overlooked corner now provides somewhere to enjoy a quiet coffee, pause with a book or simply appreciate the changing planting and visiting wildlife. A relatively small intervention has added an entirely new way for the family to enjoy their garden.
